When You Are Creatively Constipated ……….Part 2

How’s that blockage going??

This may not be news to you, this may be something that you’ve already heard of and used often. For me however, discovering  writing prompts  reignited the inspiration and my ideas ran freely!

The writing class with John Lombard (as I have already said!) was fabulous and this next activity really opened my mind at a whole new level.
Shall we begin??

Activity 2: Finding the Muse

The muse does not come to a blank page. The muse comes to people who get to work. If you are absolutely stuck, writing prompts are a good way of getting started. The important thing is just to write and get the gears turning. Inspiration finds people who get started.

Take a blank piece of paper (with or without lines, it doesn’t matter), grab a pen and a timing device (a watch, your phone, a clock etc). Give yourself 5mins to write something on that page. You can write whatever your heart desires; a poem, a short story, prose etc.
Ready?? 5mins and go!

……………………………………………………………….
How did you go? Was it really hard?
Starting something from nothing can be like getting blood from a stone!

Ok you’ll like this next one, I promise!

In this activity we will respond to a writing prompt. If you want to write badly for this activity too this is fine.

After a long, hard day of work, you return home – the only problem is, your front door is wide open, all your lights are on and there’s a sword stuck in the ceiling. The rest of your house looks normal, but you also notice several holes dug in your backyard.
What’s going on?

Again, take some paper (a couple of sheets just in case!) and a pen, give yourself 5mins.
And….. go!!

………………………………………………………….

Tell me, was it easier to write something when you had something to prompt you?
For me, this activity showed me two things;
– How much can be accomplished in a short space of time
– Sometimes all you need is a little prompting and a set time to work, for maximum productivity.

I really surprised myself with this activity, not just with how much I actually wrote in those 5mins, but the quality too!

I’d love to hear how you got on, leave me a comment and let me know!!

Just Write It!
