Overthinking

If I’m honest with you (and with myself),  I have avoided writing for a long while.

Why?

For lots of reasons every other writer has for not sitting down to their keyboard/notebook/random bits of paper….

Life gets busy and it’s hard to carve out that time to yourself…… Then routines change and life gets even crazier than it was before.

Then there are those of us who ‘make’ life busy, so that we don’t have time to write………(that’s totally me btw)

Yesterday I went out for coffee with a lovely lady who I’ve known for a while. We see each other regularly, but rarely have the time to talk.

We shared our stories and laughed together. Then she asked me what my hopes and dreams were……….*cricket sounds

(I don’t know why I sometimes find it hard to tell people I’m trying to be a writer)

I told her about my blog, and the novel I began years ago which I pick up only occasionally. When I confessed to working on neither of these things, she asked me “Why aren’t you writing?” I told her how I seemed to be more than a little stuck on my novel, and I really wasn’t sure of what I want my blog to ‘be’…….

So, my friend, (who is a straight shooter) looked me in the eye and said “You’re overthinking it! Just write whatever you feel like writing on your blog……Your blog is about writing – so write! Someone out there needs to hear what you have to say…..”

Her words were like a loving slap in the face to wake me out of my stupor.

She is completely right of course…….. Seeing as how I’ve already packed my ‘fear of failure’ in a box and thrown it away, I’ll just get on with the writing…

You as well………

Don’t overthink it, anything you write is ‘writing’.

It doesn’t have to be perfect or mind blowing all the time, but tell your story……..the one in your heart. Someone out there needs to hear it…..might even be me!

Just Write It!

  1. Overthinking is a disease. Here is a trick that helps me: Everytime i find myself overthinking, i stomp my feet which signifies stepping over those excessive thoughts!

  2. Carrie…. love this! And you! X

I don’t necessarily overthink writing, just every other aspect of my life… but the message for these other things is the same… “It doesn’t have to be perfect or mind blowing all the time”
